Summer Photography Camp for Girls: Exploring Self-Portraiture
This one-week intensive summer camp is designed to empower girls to express themselves through the art and craft of self-portrait photography. Through a series of creative photo assignments, field-trips, and slideshow presentations participants will be introduced to the creative fundamentals of photography such as composition, perspective, tone, space, timing and how to use light and shadow to create compelling and artistic photography. Participants will also learn basic photo-editing skills and curate a photo show for family and friends, and create and design a Blurb photo book featuring their self-portraits and writings.
Camp is designed for girls 13 to 17 years old and there are only 12 spots available. Early bird pricing is offered to the first 6 registrants.

Message From Diana Nazareth
This workshop was inspired by the girls I taught photography as part of an after-school mentorship program held at the Jimmie Simpson Recreation Centre, a couple of years ago. The compelling portraits these girls made during our time together highlighted for me the potential of photography to serve as a profound creative outlet for girls. Through photography the girls felt empowered to express themselves, to explore their identities as young women, and to take full ownership of their authentic perspectives and artistic voices.
Since then, I’ve worked with kids of all ages but have been eager to facilitate another photography workshop just for girls. Fortunately, the pieces came together in the form of invaluable support from hErVOLUTION, a non-profit whose mission is to expose young girls and women to the opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). We are partners in this project and will be working side by side to provide girls with the tools to make this project a memorable experience for our participants.
